National Identity Card (NIC)

How to get your first National Identity Card (CNIC), renew an expired card, or replace a lost or damaged one.

Last reviewed 11 October 2026

National Identity Card (NIC) is proof of citizenship and identity. It is also known as Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC) and is issued by the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA). Every Pakistani citizen can get a CNIC from the age of 18.

Your CNIC has a unique 13 digit number. You need it to:

  • apply for a passport
  • open a bank account
  • get a mobile phone connection
  • apply for a driving license
  • get a National Tax Number (NTN)

You can apply for, renew or replace a CNIC online through the Pak ID app or the Pak Identity website, or in person at a NADRA Registration Centre (NRC).

Get your first CNIC

You can apply once you turn 18.

You can apply through the Pak ID app if your photograph, fingerprints and iris scan are already linked to your Child Registration Certificate (CRC or B-Form). Otherwise, you need to visit an NRC to have your biometrics recorded.

You will usually need:

If your parents or family members are not registered with NADRA, other documents and witnesses are needed. Check the requirements with NADRA before you go.

Renew an expired CNIC

Your CNIC shows an expiry date. Renew it before it expires, as an expired card may not be accepted by banks and other services.

You can renew your CNIC in the Pak ID app or at an NRC. Your CNIC number stays the same.

Replace a lost or damaged CNIC

You can request a new card if yours is lost, stolen or damaged:

  1. Open the Pak ID app and go to Identity Documents then CNIC.
  2. Select the person the card belongs to.
  3. Choose Reprint and follow the steps.

You can also apply at an NRC. If your card was stolen, you may want to report it to the police.

Fees and processing time

Fees depend on how quickly you need the card (normal, urgent or executive) and whether you apply in Pakistan or abroad. NADRA changes fees from time to time, so check the current fee before you apply.
